More Than a Metric: Why Your Story is the Heart of Your Training

More Than a Metric: Why Your Story is the Heart of Your Training

In the world of coaching, it’s incredibly easy to get buried in the data. We have heart rate zones, power curves, weekly mileage, and sleep scores at our fingertips. But if I’ve learned one thing from every athlete I’ve coached, it’s this: The data tells me what is happening, but it’s your story that tells me why.

Before I write a single session or prescribe a pace, I ask one simple question: Tell me about your life. Not just your race history or your PBs, but your life. Without that context, I am building your training on sand.

Coaching the Human, Not Just the Athlete

Every person who comes to me for coaching carries a context that is entirely their own. I see the shift worker with broken sleep, the parent balancing long runs with childcare, the professional carrying work stress, and the athlete quietly nursing the fear of a past injury.

These are not obstacles to a training plan—they are the training plan.

I refuse to treat you as a data point. When athletes are handed generic targets without an understanding of the life those numbers must fit into, they struggle and feel like they are failing. In reality, the plan was simply never right for them in the first place. To get the best out of your body, we must respect what’s going on in your head and your heart.

Why Your Perspective Matters

When we work together, your personal story becomes the pillar of your training. We bring this "human-first" approach to life through:

  • Adaptability over Rigidity: Life doesn’t happen in a vacuum. If a "perfect" session on paper adds unnecessary stress to a chaotic Tuesday, we don’t force it—we pivot together. Adaptive coaching of runners and triathletes.
  • Honouring Your "Why": I want to understand what drives you on the days when motivation is thin and the weather is terrible. Whether you run for a podium or for peace, knowing your unique motivation helps me tailor the how to keep you inspired.
  • The Nuance of Your Voice: I value your personal post session comments just as much as your GPS data. I want to know how a set felt and what you were thinking, because that is where real progress is found.
  • Radical Honesty: An athlete who feels they must hide exhaustion to meet expectations is headed for a hole we'll both have to dig them out of. When you know I see you fully—not just your splits—you can be honest, and that honesty is where we thrive.
More Than a Metric: Why Your Story is the Heart of Your Training

You Are a Partner, Not a Number

Stress is stress—whether it comes from a track session or a difficult week at work. My job is to hold all of that with you, not pretend it doesn’t exist. Performance and life are not separate things; they are the same thing looked at from different angles.

In a world of automated apps and "one-size-fits-all" templates, the human element is often the first thing to go. I refuse to let that happen.

You aren’t just another athlete on the books—you are a partner in this process. Your story is the most important piece of equipment you own. Let’s make sure we use it.
